As you might expect, Rocky View Fire Services (RVFS) plays a critical role in our ever-expanding municipality. Eight years ago, our firefighting contingent consisted of just 21 volunteers and one Fire Chief based in Langdon. Today we maintain three full-time fire stations in Springbank, Chestermere and Balzac, and 3 volunteer stations in Langdon, Irricana and Madden. This equates to 260 Paid-On-Call and volunteer firefighters, 28 full-time firefighters, 3 Deputy Chiefs, and one Fire Chief.
As we grow, so do the pressures we place on this most vital municipal service. If you fit the requirements for one of our RVFS roles and you want to make a real impact in your community, we'd love to hear from you.
Paid-On-Call (POC) Firefighters
POC firefighters are casual employees who work between 48 and 120 hours each month. They set their own schedules to accommodate other jobs and obligations. Our full-time fire stations require three-four POC firefighters per 24-hour shift, and provide one additional training spot for a less qualified POC.
Volunteer Firefighters
Volunteer firefighters do not book shifts at a station, but live close to the communities they serve and carry a pager. When an incident occurs they are alerted via pager and respond to the call if they can. Volunteers also commit to volunteer hours in training and station upkeep.
RVFS Expansion Plans
To keep pace with development, RVFS is gearing up to open a new full-time station in Elbow Valley in 2009, with a potential Bearspaw location to follow. These additional stations will increase our need for POC firefighters, and will create opportunities for additional full-time Firefighters and Fire Captains. RVFS has also ramped up its training program to include NFPA 1001 training opportunities to ensure that our firefighters are well equipped to continue to provide Rocky View with top-notch fire protection.
