The Health and Safety Assistant will work closely with the Health and Safety Advisor to provide administrative and coordination support for Health and Safety systems and training programs and assist in the development and implementation of job specific health and safety plans.
• Support Health and Safety Advisor activities:o Hazard Assessment - Organize annual Hazard Assessment project. - Facilitate hazard assessment reviews for all positions. - Update existing Hazard assessment templates to include changes. - Coach leaders in the hazard and risk definitions, identification and controls.o Manager Inspection tours - Participate in Area Manager inspection tours. - Provide guidance on corrective actions.o Supervise Inspection tourso New Hire Orientations - Conduct the Health & Safety orientations for new hires. - Conduct WHMIS training during orientations.o Annual Fire Drills - Schedule Fire Drills at RVC facilities. - Participate in Fire Drills. - Observe and document fire drill activities. - Participate in a debrief with Evacuation Leaders.o Safety Meetings - Participate in area monthly safety meetings as subject matter expert.o FLHA Coaching - Tours with leaders to review FLHA use. - Assist in identification and control of hazards.o Incident Management - Update incident spreadsheet with occurrence report details. - Follow-up on corrective action completion (eCompliance system).
• Must have completed at least one year of full or part time studies in a health and safety program at a post-secondary education institution and will be attending school in September 2017 for further studies in health and safety.• Excellent written and oral communication skills.• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.• Critical thinking and problem solving.• Coordinating and organizing teams.• Good presentation and computer skills.• Creating a positive change by applying strong influence and advising skills.• Recommending, developing, and implementing compliance strategies and plans.• Wear and use required personal safety equipment; supply own CSA approved footwear.• Hold a valid Class 5 vehicle operator’s permit (you will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to beginning employment).• First Aid certification is preferable.
